North Dakota Update

•May 10, 2010 • Comments Off on North Dakota Update

The Workshop in North Dakota is done and after about 30 hours on the train I arrived in Seattle yesterday. It was a great week with Tillman Crane and six other serious photographers.

The second half of the week was almost uniformly heavy overcast with intermittent rain and a little snow and sleet. The wind was also pretty much ever present so it hardly felt like spring. However, while would have liked a bit more variety in the light, the soft light was nice for a lot of the shots.

Over the course of the week I shot many images and I have a massive editing job ahead to try to make something coherent out it. Here is a simple slide show with a few random images from the second half of the week.

North Dakota Workshop, First Images

•May 5, 2010 • Comments Off on North Dakota Workshop, First Images

After three days of phot0graphing near Rugby, ND, I finally have a few minutes to offer a few preliminary images. I am with Tillman Crane and six other participants and we have experienced rain, wind, a brief thunderstorm and glorious sunlight, but no matter what the light conditions, the landscape and visual environment in North Dakota is breathtaking. The sky is ever changing and the remains of so many abandoned homes, churches and businesses is a testament to the isolated harshness of the environment. Still, for those who can learn to live here, it must be the only place to live.

Here are a few random images from the first three days. I’ll try to post some more soon.

Headed West!

I am in final preparations for a photo adventure in North Dakota and the Pacific Northwest!

I will be spending a week in North Dakota participating in a workshop with Tillman Crane entitled “Abandoned Farms of North Dakota.” I remember when the brochure for Tillman’s 2010 workshops came in. When I saw this my instant reaction was “I’ve GOT to do this!”

Adding to the fun of it, I will be taking the train (Capitol Limited) from Martinsburg overnight to Chicago, and then the “Empire Builder from Chicago” to the thriving metropolis of Rugby, ND, population about 3,000.

After a week in Rugby, I will be back on the train headed west to Seattle for about 10 days of visiting family and touring (and photographing.)

I am going to try to post some comments and images here on this blog, so please check back frequently over the next several weeks.

Rip Smith's Display at the Ice House Co-op

Here is my updated display at the Ice House Co-op

I am pleased to let you know that the Ice House Co-op in Berkeley Springs has reopened after major repairs to the floor. In celebration of the reopening, I am offering a subtantial body of new work that has not been offered before at the Ice house. The new work includes images from Washington, DC, Maine, and various locations around Eastern Panhandle Region.

There will be a reception at the Ice House next Friday, March 26 at 7:30pm for the opening of the “Valor in the Valley” exhibit, which marks the 150th anniversary of the Civil War in the region especially Stonewall Jackson’s 1862 Bath-Romney Campaign. I will be attending the reception and will look forward to meeting and discussing my new work with any of you who might drop by.

Earlier in the week I judged the Third Juried Photographic Exhibit at the Contemporary School for the Arts and Gallery in Hagerstown. The opening reception will be tomorrow, March 20, from 3-5pm during which I will present the awards for the best color and black and white entries. The gallery is located at 4 West Franklin Street in Hagerstown.

Plans are moving forward for a new gallery in Charles Town. The expected opening is in mid April and I hope to have work on display and available for purchase in that location. I will update everyone with the details when they are finalized.

And looking forward to May, I am excited to be traveling to North Dakota for a week of photographing abandoned farms and towns with Tillman Crane and several other accomplished photographers. This will be a “shooting workshop” with an intense schedule of photographing from dawn to dusk for a whole week. I hope to bring back some great images and if I have any energy left at the end of the days shooting, I hope to be able to post some of the images here on the blog. Stay tuned …

Success in Cumberland

•February 21, 2010 • Comments Off on Success in Cumberland

Last night was the reception for the 17th Annual Tri-State Photographic Exhibition at the Saville Gallery in Cumberland, Maryland. The juried exhibit is sponsored by the Allegany Arts Council.

I was very pleased to have two images accepted for the exhibit and even more pleased that my image, “Remembering” was awarded “Best Black and White.”

"Remembering"

The image was captured in April, 2009 during one of my photo outings in DC. I had not visited the Vietnam Memorial “Wall” before and I was taken by the way people were interacting with the wall. Some people were just looking but others were actively searching for names. I wanted to capture the feeling of the interactions but did not want to photograph people directly and intrude on their privacy or, in some cases grief.  The reflective qualities of the polished stone gave me the means to capture the feeling without intruding.

The second image that was in the exhibit was “Splash”, the sculpture and fountain at the front of the Library of Congress.

The exhibit runs through March 6 in the Saville gallery at 9 N. Centre Street in Cumberland, Maryland.

After I made the cyanotype prints a couple of months ago I showed them around and received some very positive feedback. I’ve decided to make some of them available on etsy.com.

These are the first prints I completed where I was satisfied with the overall tonal range and color. These are small prints approximately 4.5×7 inches and matted to 8×10. The price is $35.00 plus shipping.

Images and a description of the process was posted here and here.

New Print of the Month

•February 11, 2010 • Comments Off on New Print of the Month

I’m a little late with this transition, but I have posted a new “Print of the Month” Image.

While exploring central West Virginia about a year and a half ago, I came upon this gem in the front yard of a house on the road to Thurmond, WV.

Image for the February "Print of the Month". You can click on image to order a print at a special price.

To emphasize the textures of this old classic car, I used HDR with tonemapping plus some additional detail enhancement.

If you would like to purchase print of this image at a special price, you can do it here.

Meanwhile, we’re snowbound after a cumulative snowfall over several days of about 3 feet.

Here was the view out our living room window yesterday.

Now we’re getting ready to start thinking about how we’re going to dig ourselves out. We might think about it for a while!
